Congratulations to Ginninderra’s under 14 Division 1 team for winning the premiership for season 2012/13. The flag was just reward for the hard work the boys put in all season. They ended the home and away season on top of the ladder and produced two great performances in the semi final and grand final to finish off the season on a high note.
The Grand Final saw them pitted against Eastlake at O’Connor 2-03 oval. Day one - we won the toss and batted first, with Jack and Matt H getting the team away to a great start with an opening partnerhip of 72. Both boys batted with real intent punishing any loose balls with ferocity. Matt was first to go for 35, with the partnership yielding 72. Jack batted on to top score with a well made captain’s knock of 60. After the first wicket, the wickets fell regularly, with Ginninderra slipping from 0/72 to 6/124 and in real danger of being bowled out well before their 50 overs. The momentum was with Eastlake who had really lifted in the field. Zac and Tom then set about blunting the attack with resolute batting, determined to graft out every run and ensure their team bat out the overs. They took the score to 160 when Zac fell for 23 trying to lift the run rate. Duncan strode to the crease and proceeded to smash them everywhere. It was simply a stunning display of power batting, 47no from 32 balls, he helped rocket our score to 7/218 at the end of the 50 overs. Tom finished a very valuable 18 no, playing a great team role.
Day two – the Eastlake openers got their team off to a good start with some attacking batting. We were a bit down until Rishi plucked the ball from nowhere in the covers and threw to Jack for a great run out – our first wicket. The roar from the Tigers huddle suggested this was just the start. The next over Rishi got the edge with some outswing and Tom at first slip did the rest – two down. All the boys lifted, Jack was marshalling the troops well from behind the stumps with Nick and Lawrence setting the standard in the field. The wickets fell at regular intervals after that, although Eastlake was scoring freely the Tigers were on top. George and Duncan both beat the batsmen with great swinging balls to send the stumps flying and George claimed his second wicket with a sharp catch by Liam at gully. Matt G spun his leggies sharply and created a number of chances but unfortunately none of them stuck. Liam who had been a dynamo in the field all day threw to Jack who threw down the bowler’s stumps for a great keepers run out, 6 down and the boys could taste the win. Zac was brought back into the attack to finish it off and he didn’t disappoint bowling with genuine pace and ending with 3 wickets, 2 diving catches to Lawrence and a cleaned bowled. In between Zac’s wickets, Matt H spun up a wicket with Lawrence again taking the catch. Eastlake all out for 135 and the Tigers had the match.
It was a great team win with many of the boys putting their hand up when it was needed and the boys who had a quiet GF all played a significant role in getting us there. The Premiership team are:
Lawrence Atkin, Nick Chenery, Duncan Gammage, Matthew Gray, Rishi Gunreddy, George Hay, Matthew Hogan, Zac Lindsay, Jack Powell (c), Div Randev, Tom Rankin, Liam Telford
Coach Stuart Hay and Manager Jake Lindsay
Special mention to the first graders who having been working with these boys at training, particularly Nick Owen for all the help over the last two seasons and to Ben Fulford and Cameron Suidgeest for their recent efforts, it was greatly appreciated by the boys. Hopefully some of the boys will be playing with you in a few seasons time.
