It was with great pleasure that the Ginninderra CC accepted the Brindabella Bugle to make the journey down with the team to cover the last of the preliminary rounds of the Konica T20 competition. Ginninderra looking to give themselves some chance of progressing through to the next round (with a win, tie and loss so far), a win in this instance, a must.
The trip down to the Riverina on Saturday night went without much fuss. I did manage however to learn new advances in culinary techniques at a stop off at the food court. ‘Food’ a loose way to describe what was devoured en masse, simply face-planting into your meal and eating your way out only coming up for air as often as blue whale seemed to serve the purpose of getting the job done quickly whilst also entertaining the other patrons.
Sunday morning the Tigers set off to Robertson Oval where it started to heat up pretty early. The Tigers led by Assad Vala stepping up to skipper for star bat and regular skipper Jeremy Bray who was at a gas-up in Sydney (part of the amazing 150 Yr celebration of St George Cricket Club) won the toss and elected to bat. New Tiger James Shannon opened up with Daniel Upward who went first over. Vala then came to the crease to put on 30 odd before Vala went for 15. Wagga bowlers Bartlett and Bloomfield getting the ball to swing around early. Shannon was next to go looking to force the pace departing for 17. Some very handy contributions from Nick Owen who pinned the middle overs together with 48, Tim Clunes with 15, Cameron Suidguest with a handy 20 and Jack Vare making running between the wickets too easy with 18. Tigers in the end making 8/137 from their 20 Overs.
The Tigers then got off to a great start with both Lochie Christen and Suidguest picking up early wickets with Christen picking up 3 and Suidguest 1. Tigers continued to bowl tightly and up the asking rate with Vare in the field a special taking 3 tricky catches and making them look easy. Shane Getkate came on a took a few poles bowling good lines (although did get hit for the biggest six – the QBN boys who arrived before their game scattering in the outer like they were getting shelled by a tank). Getkate also picked up a superb direct run out as did Shannon to finish a tidy effort by the Tigers to bowl Wagga out for 78.
Despite only being the shortest of formats the Tigers were fairly tired on the trip home, only springing into action to show their displeasure of an ill conceived overtaking move by one truck trying to overtake another on one mother of a hill. Summoning all their strength (young keeper Chris Jansen leading the way) everyone was able to give a collective moon to the offending truck driver (litres of windex will be needed to take care of the smudges). To the surprise of everyone the driver was in fact former Tiger Daniel Poidiven who seemed to indicate the moon was a 1 out of ten before we waved and sped off.
A good well rounded performance by Ginninderra and we’ll see if it’s enough to get them through the next round of the 1st grade T20 comp.
I’ll be filling in for our sports-editor at large Dick Hertz over the next few weeks while he covers the lobster racing in Mt Druitt so hope to be around the sunny traps of Kippax 2 shortly to cover the One-dayers in the lead up to Christmas.
Also any other games you’d like covered, get in touch with your requests to our Bugle front desk with Kay Runch (k.runch@brindabellabugle.com.au) and we’ll see how we can continue to sully this newspapers’ reputation.
Regards,
